Davidoff Gourmet Safari, 1st Nov 2003

I was not sure what to expect on a Gourmet Safari, but the word safari conjured up visions of riding in a jeep, shooting animals and getting some Michelin-starred cooks to do the BBQ on the campfire. In the event, it was a very civilised affair all round, and the only thing we killed was the beautiful food arrangements as we devoured each course at the various locations (6 in total). We didn't even get to ride on a jeep as we were transported around in a luxury coach to each restaurant. However, there was a little wild moment when the Argentinian star cook, Martiniano Molina, was seen hopping on the bull statue outside the Adlon Hotel, waving and shouting his goodbyes to us after our wonderful dinner there. And apart from me trying to smoke my first cigar this decade, that was about the only incongruous sight the whole evening. Everyone was very elegant and well-mannered (apart from me) and looked like they can handle a gun if they needed to. But the need never arose, thankfully.

An truly excellent night all round, and one that must be repeated, just in case one forgets what it's like to go on a proper food safari!

Chris
